How to Use Nuke: A Beginner’s Guide to Professional Compositing
Nuke is one of the most powerful node-based compositing tools used widely in film, TV, and high-end VFX production. If you want to create stunning visual effects with precision and flexibility, learning how to use Nuke is a great way to start your VFX journey. Its workflow is built around nodes, giving you full control over each step of your composite.

To begin, download and install Nuke from the official Foundry website. Once you open the software, you’ll see the Node Graph, Viewer, and Properties panel. These three areas form the core of your workspace. The Node Graph is where you connect nodes to build your composite, while the Viewer shows you the output of any selected node.
Start by importing your footage. Go to File > Read and choose your image sequence or video. Nuke displays your media as a Read node in the Node Graph. You can view it by pressing the number “1” on your keyboard with the node selected. This simple shortcut helps you preview any stage of your work quickly.
